If you're looking at Calgary real estate and wondering what the city is like at Christmas, take heart because it's a really nice place to spend the holidays. I've lived here all my life, and I always look forward to this season.
Christmas in Calgary starts as early as November, when most Christmas markets open and shops and homes have Christmas trees and decors set up. I love the colors and the lights! They really make the spirit of the season come alive. In fact one of the favorite traditions in Calgary this time of the year is a visit to the amazing Calgary Zoolights, which was voted the Best Christmas Event in the 2011 Calgary's Child Magazine’s Parents’ Choice Awards and one of Canada’s Top 10 holiday light shows.
If you want to experience a really traditional, old-fashioned Christmas, go to Heritage Park Historical Village. You can ride a horse-drawn wagon around the village, visit homes from 100 Christmases back, sing carols in the church and with roving carolers, sip hot chocolate by a fire, watch model trains, decorate gingerbread men, shop for gifts and make holiday crafts with your kids, skate, play outdoor winter games, visit Santa and make a community mural in the snow.
Calgary is home to many families from all over the world, so Christmas in this great city is still basically family time. I’ve always made sure we spend Christmas with the kids. We see the light shows and quad and skid around the zoo or walk our dog and fool around with snowball fights. It's so much fun!
For friends, I’d throw a nice Christmas party for around 60 guests with lots of good food, good music and heartwarming conversations.
One more special thing I could say about Calgary at Christmastime, though, is how it doesn't forget to spread the Christmas cheer to others. It's a very generous city. Calgarians just love to give back! At Christmas time, lots of 'giving back' goes on – fundraising activities for children in need, gatherings for single moms, and charity work by lots of foundations. I particularly like reaching out to single moms, as I was a single mom for seven years before I remarried and I’m a big believer of these great women who supply the family’s needs by themselves by taking two or three odd jobs while taking care of the kids alone. I sponsored a single mom one Christmas and I enjoyed it immensely – I bought gifts and goodies for her kids and prepared a nice Christmas meal for them with turkey. I think I’ll do it again this year.
